Common Accounts began work on an incremental renovation of Annex Post’s existing office space in Toronto in June 2024. Annex Post—a film post-production studio that works on both big budget Hollywood movies and critically acclaimed independent films—first approached Common Accounts to design two dynamic editing suites to house directors and editors while assembling and finishing their projects.

Over the course of their initial collaboration, Annex Post’s office space in their building doubled, prompting the expansion of the project’s scope.

The suite executed by Common Accounts in November 2024 constitutes the first in a multi-phase renovation and establishes many of the codes that will eventually be applied to transform the adjacent spaces, which include another editing suite, offices, and meeting areas.

The suite’s design develops from an interest in green screen studios used for chroma key compositing. At its centre is a modular workstation that can separate into four pieces—a large chair, a couch, and two desks—or combine into a monolith, fastened by roto-locks.

The renovation re-uses and adapts existing materials and surfaces and enhances the room’s performance with sub-floor conduits for cables, layered blinds for black-out conditions, and a rubber floor typically used for gyms that enables the large furniture pieces to glide without resistance.

This renovation transforms a banal office room into another world altogether. Ceiling, walls, furniture, and floor are all the same green. The result is immersion in the abstract. The room is an environment made to accommodate whatever film’s post-production it may house, and its surfaces develop this mutability in a nod to the chroma key.
